Games & Lesson Plan Ideas

Nakayoshi "Blind Toss"

Target: Any Vocabulary
Author: (Adapt.) Salvador Domingo
Materials: Flashcards, beanbag, number cards or mats (1-10), blindfold
Playing Time: 15 minutes

1. Review the target voacabulary using the flashcards
2. Place number cards/mats on the floor (1-10)
3. Place a flashcard on each number card/ mat
4. Taking turns, each S gets blindfolfded and tosses the beanbag so as to hit a number
5. The Ss must then call out the flashcard the same number of times as the corresponding number (eg: "4= Dog, Dog, Dog, Dog!")

G1 LP1 "Bomb Game"

Target: Numbers 1-60
Author: (Adapt.) Salvador Domingo
Materials: Number cards (1-60), Stopwatch, couple of "Bombs" made of paper
Playing Time: 10 minutes

1. Review the Numbers 1-60 using the flashcards
2. Put the children in a circle
3. Set the stop watch (e.g. 30sec)
4. Get the Ss to pass around the stopwatch as they call out the numbers in English
5. When the alarm goes off, the S with the stopwatch gets a paper bomb
6. Continue to do so but reducing the time each round (e.g. 30sec, 25sec, 20sec, 10 sec, 5sec!). Trust me, this creates excitement among the Ss
7. To spice things up a bit more whoever gets two "bombs", is out (this rarely happens, but then again it creates excitement)

G1 LP4 "Ball Race"

Target: Numbers 1-10/ 1-20
Author: Salvador Domingo
Materials: Number cards (1-10/ 1-20), 2 small soft balls
Playing Time: 10 minutes

1. Review the Numbers 1-1/ 1-20 using the flashcards
2. Ss sit in 2 big circles
3. Give a ball to each team
4. The Ss must pass the ball as they count 1-10/ 1-20. The fastest to reach 10 wins!
5.Repeat couple rounds starting from a different student each time
Variation Have the Ss try counting backwards!

G1 LP5 "Ball Race"

Target: Numbers 1-10/ 1-20

Materials: Number cards (1-10/ 1-20), 2 small soft balls
Playing Time: 10 minutes

1. Review the Numbers 1-1/ 1-20 using the flashcards
2. Ss sit in 2 big circles
3. Give a ball to each team
4. The Ss must pass the ball as they count 1-10/ 1-20. The fastest to reach 10 wins!
5. Repeat couple rounds starting from a different student each time
Variation Have the Ss try counting backwards!

"Gokiburi Karuta"

Target: Any Vocabulary
Author: Salvador Domingo
Materials: Flashcards, Flyswatters, a Paper Cockroach ("gokiburi")
Playing Time: 15-20 minutes

1. Review the target Vocabulary using the flashcards
2. Ss make a circle around a table/ desk
3. Give each S a flyswatter
4. Spread the flashcards and the Gokiburi (cockroach) on the desk
5. Call out a card and have the Ss slap it
6. Whenever you say "Gokiburi" (cockroach), all the Ss must slap it as fast as possible
7. The last S to slap the cockroach, either misses a turn or gives one card back
8. The S with the most cards wins!
